Teaching
For the last seven years, teaching has been a very important part of my life. My first teaching experience was teaching courses in Chinese at my undergraduate institution, Kenyon College. I taught discussion sections in Chinese for four semesters at Kenyon. I also served as a grader in the mathematics department during this time and served as a volunteer tutor at Wiggin Street Elementary School.
At the University of Iowa, I taught for ten semesters in the mathematics department. My teaching at Iowa included courses in elementary education, calculus for the life sciences, calculus for math majors, multivariable calculus for engineers, and graduate courses in abstract algebra. In addition, I served as the primary instructor for coursework in college algebra and precalculus as well as a preparatory seminar for the graduate qualifying exam in algebra and a workshop for graduate students about to teach for the first time. As a result of my effective teaching, I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, a university-wide award, in 2015, and I received the Catharine Wegner Outstanding Mathematics TA Award in 2014.
In May 2015, I completed the University of Iowa's Certificate in College Teaching. This certificate is designed to prepare graduate students to be more effective post-secondary educators. For this certificate, I completed the following coursework:
In addition, as part of the Certificate in College Teaching, I undertook teaching practicums in the following courses:
In Spring 2015, I completed the course Special Project for Graduate Students: TILE Pedagogy and Practice. This course was designed to give students experience teaching in TILE rooms. In taking this class, I learned how to both more effectively use technology in the classroom and engage students in collaborative learning activities. At MathFest 2015, I presented a poster on my experiences in the TILE environment.
In Spring 2015, I also completed the course Topics in Topology: Mentoring Undergraduates on Research in Data Analysis. In this course, I learned how to engage undergraduate students in mathematical research. In addition, I learned how to maintain my research program as a professor and techniques on how to secure funding and apply for grants.
Finally, from 2016-2017, I am teaching mathematics courses at Oberlin College. I am currently teaching Calculus Ia and Calculus II, and in the spring I will teach Calculus Ib and Multivariable Calculus.
