Academic/Professional Service
At Oberlin, I have served as an organizer for the STRONG program, a program designed for incoming students interested in the STEM fields to match up and work with a faculty member in research in the summer before their freshman year. I reviewed applications and helped to select interested students to take part in this program. In this role, I met Miranda Schaum, whom I conducted research with during the summer before her first year at Oberlin.
I am currently co-organizing a session at the 2018 Joint Mathematics Meetings as part of the Project NExT session. Our session will be a panel discussion on Assessing and Addressing Diverse Mathematical Backgrounds in the Classroom.
I am currently serving as the faculty liaison to the Mathematics Majors Committee. In this position, I have helped the majors in the department to host a variety of student events, including an event for majors to learn about career opportunities after graduation and weekly tea social events.
Within the Mathematics department at Iowa, I served on the Math Graduate Board throughout my time at Iowa. In 2015, I was the General Liaison, whose duties are to bring math student issues to outside student groups and administration. In 2013, I served as Newsletter Co-chair, publishing a monthly newsletter to the department. Finally, in 2012, I served as co-organizer of the Graduate and Undergraduate Student Seminar (GAUSS). In 2013 and 2014, I also served on the Travel Committee, a role in which I distributed money for graduate student conference travel.
In 2015, I served as an English Buddy to help other graduate students improve their English language skills. I also served as a First-Year buddy from 2012-2014, a role in which I helped an incoming graduate student each year adjust to graduate life. Finally, I served as a judge in 2013 and 2014 for the Iowa Mathematical Modeling Competition, judging both undergraduate student abstracts and presentations.
I have also involved myself in many roles outside the department. In 2015, I served as Mathematics senator on the Graduate Student Senate. In this position, I served on the Jakobsen Conference Committee in which I organized an annual conference for Iowa graduate students to present their research. I also was a moderator for the session "Diversity in the Classroom" at this conference in 2015. I have also served as one of four student members of the Graduate Council, the executive committee of the graduate faculty at Iowa, a position in which I presided over many decisions relating to the Graduate College such as adding new graduate degrees at the university.
From 2013-2015, I was a poster judge at the biannual Undergraduate Research Festival held by the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates. I also worked with Iowa's Center for Teaching as an observer at Micro-Teaching workshops in order to give new teachers constructive feedback on their teaching performance.
